Rockland Country Day School consists of three academic divisions: the Children’s School, the Middle School, and the Upper School.
Children’s School students learn in a supportive and developmentally appropriate environment, exploring ideas, materials and language that prepare them for the highly individualized curriculum the school offers in the higher grades. In Middle School, emphasis is placed on helping students embrace the many intellectual, physical, and psychological/emotional changes that children experience at this age. Students play an active role in their education by participating in a variety of clubs and hands-on activities which complement their learning in the classroom. In Upper School, learning is differentiated based on a student’s interests and abilities, with the school providing a solid foundation in the humanities, foreign languages, mathematics, science, and the visual and performing arts.
We believe in using a combination of authentic and traditional assessments of student learning. Our teachers use a variety of methods to teach classroom material and also to assess what students know and can do. End of unit projects, student-created skits, portfolios, debates, creative writing assignments, and essays are common assessments of student learning. These assessments coupled with traditional tests and quizzes allow our students to demonstrate their understanding in multiple ways. We administer the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) standardized test once a year to students in Grades 3 through 10 in order to measure student progress, not just what they’ve memorized, and use the results to examine areas for targeted instruction.
Our curriculum standards are informed by our own pedagogical priorities as educators as well as the National Common Core Standards. The strength of our curriculum is evidenced in our students’ college placements: 100% of our students are accepted into colleges of their choice, many with merit-aid awards.
We also have a long history of educating children who are gifted in traditional academic subjects and talented in the arts. Our focus on the individual informs our commitment to design individualized programs to meet the learning needs of our gifted students, while ensuring that social development with peers takes place.
Our small class sizes, flexible learning environment, inclusive community, rigorous hands-on, curriculum, and talented teachers, make Rockland Country Day School a wonderful choice for families searching for the right balance for their child.
